It’s still too early to accurately predict how much damage Hurricane Ian will cause in Florida, but what is certain is at just under a category 5, Hurricane Ian is immensely powerful. Historically, hurricanes between category 3-5 nearly always cause billions in damage within their path.
From September 27 to September 28, Hurricane Ian drastically increased in strength, with max winds at 155 mph. As a hurricane’s max sustained winds increase, the expected property damage also increases exponentially.
What to do if Hurricane Ian damages your home or commercial property?
Photograph or take videos of the damage to your property
Pictures and videos help create a strong property damage claim, making it harder for your homeowner’s insurance company to underpay or deny you.
Take measures to protect your home from further damage.
Many homeowner’s insurance policies require the policyholder to take reasonable measures to protect the property from further damage. For example, if your window breaks as a result of the storm, cover or seal the opening with a board to prevent water from entering the home.
Remember to keep a record of the actions you take to secure your home and keep every receipt.
File a property damage claim
There is a deadline as to when you can file a claim for damage from Hurricane Ian, so be sure to file a claim as soon as you notice the damage.
Document every interaction with the insurance company
Insurance companies can often appear to be on your side, but at the end of the day, they only care about their bottom line. Be sure to accurately document every interaction you have with them. This can help strengthen your case in the event the insurance company decides to underpay or deny your claim.

Hurricane Ian intensifies to a major storm threatening Florida.
Hurricane Ian is expected to cause widespread damage across the State of Florida. Florida residents can expect to see wind damage, flooding, tornadoes, and heavy rain. The strongest winds are located along the eye wall, but since the outer bands of the hurricane travel further out, damage from Ian is expected to stretch throughout the entire State of Florida.
We’ve already seen multiple tornadoes form as a result of Hurricane Ian, with two spawning within Fort Lauderdale, FL (hundreds of miles from the eye of the hurricane). CBS News reported the tornadoes touched ground on the night of September 27, 2022.
