Hurricane Milton made landfall as a category 3 storm on Florida’s West Coast in Siesta Key on October 9, 2024, at 8:30 pm.  At the time it made landfall, Milton’s sustained winds were a devastating 120 MPH. Strong enough to down trees, damage roofs, break windows and doors, and powerful enough to tear through homes. Milton created unsafe conditions for anyone in its path.

There was nothing normal about Hurricane Milton. From its time as a tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico, meteorologists could already understand the severe threat Milton posed for Florida.

Meteorologist Derek Van Dam described three things about Milton that scared him the most, and looking at his points tells a story about why this storm was so devastating.

  • Milton’s angle as it slammed into Florida: Hurricane Milton crashed into Florida, it basically “t-boned” the state.
  • Milton’s expanding wind field as it entered Florida:  The storm’s wind field nearly “doubled in size” as it entered Florida.
  • Milton’s time of arrival made it a nighttime hurricane:  Milton made landfall at 11 pm, a time when people were vulnerable.  Nighttime hurricanes are also more difficult to react to when conditions are unsafe, and visibility is low.

Attorney John Tolley (Founder of JT Law Firm) spoke out about three things about Hurricane Milton that concerned him.

  • An already damaged coastline: Florida’s West Coast was already side-swiped by Hurricane Helene, and then not even two weeks later, Hurricane Milton, ranking as one of the strongest hurricanes to form in the Gulf of Mexico headed straight to an already damaged part of the state.
  • Tornadic activity early into the storm: Tornadoes were spotted ahead of Milton’s landfall near midday October 9, 2024, in Broward County, the Everglades, and in several cities around Lake Okeechobee.
  • Unpredictable behavior: Milton just kept surpassing what meteorologists were reporting. At one point a meteorologist stated the storm kept going up a category nearly “every 12 hours”.

Understanding the claims process for Hurricane Milton in Florida is critical if you want to get paid for your damage.

You have one year to file a claim for property damage from Hurricane Milton in Florida. This means that October 9, 2025, is the last day you can file a claim.

What can you do now to help increase your chances of getting a fair payout?

Speak with an attorney as soon as possible. Remember, insurance companies are not in the business of losing money. They are indeed for-profit entities and they want to maximize their own profits.

We’ve caught insurance companies going out of their way to purposely deny and underpay valid claims. This is one way they keep their profits high.

When your claim is unjustly denied or if you are offered a lowball settlement for your damage, JT Law Firm’s experienced property damage lawyers can step in and fiercely fight for your claim to be properly paid.

The process of filing a claim for damages caused by Hurricane Milton can seem overwhelming. However, with the help of a dedicated property damage attorney, you can navigate this process smoothly.
